Keeping an Open Heart

June 30, 2026

Like being open-minded, keeping an open heart is not about bending your boundaries and breaking your routines or mindsets.

For the high-achieving female entrepreneur, executive, or investor, the path to success is rarely paved with soft sentiments. Most of us got where we are today because of grit, drive, and an unshakeable determination. We see how our male counterparts operate in hardened, tough masculinity, and we rise to the occasion with the same ferocity, whether it feels foreign or not. In this grand pursuit of excellence, an open heart isn't just overlooked, it's often viewed as a liability.

As though softness and strength can’t coexist; as though approaching situations with kindness and genuine caring are a weakness.

We tell ourselves that keeping our hearts open causes us to be vulnerable to distraction, betrayal, or failure. So to counteract this perceived “weakness,” we create strict preferences, build flawless professional personas, and map out exactly what we think will make us happy and successful. Life becomes less about feeling, and more about planning.

Yet, so many women hit those hard-fought milestones, look around their six-figure realities, and are met with an unexpected, echoing unfulfillment. We achieve everything we set out to capture, only to realize we had the equation entirely wrong.

The truth that elite women must eventually face is that our driven, hyper-focused minds can build empires, but they cannot relax enough to experience true joy. Sustainable fulfillment only arrives when we stop allowing the mind's ambitions to dictate our worth, and instead allow the heart to lead, anchored in a deep desire for love, connection, and true contribution.

What Does Keeping an Open Heart Actually Mean?

The dictionary describes an open heart as expressing or displaying one’s warm and kind feelings without concealment.

It sounds simple, almost elementary. But in practice, true open-heartedness is a radical, courageous act. It means moving through the world without an emotional shield. It means allowing your genuine warmth to be visible, not just to the inner circle of people you already know and love, but to complete strangers as well. It's about reflecting light like the moon.

Look around the next time you walk into a crowded room, an airport terminal, or a high-level networking event. Most people you encounter would not be described as open-hearted. We live in a culture where people walk with their heads down, eyes glued to screens, actively avoiding engagement. It is a protective mechanism. We armor up to stay safe from discomfort, rejection, or the simple demands of human connection. You may even find that you operate in a protective loop on a daily basis, where your fear of discomfort causes you to keep your head down and avoid eye contact, building ironclad walls of emotional armor that only isolate you from everyone else.

When we lead exclusively with our drive, we treat the world as a series of transactions or obstacles. An open heart flips this dynamic entirely. It requires us to lift our heads, look people in the eye, and recognize that every single interaction is an opportunity to expand our capacity for love and contribution.

Retraining the Machine: Shifting from Head to Heart

Allowing your heart to lead is not a passive switch, but an active practice that requires consistent self-awareness. The mind is a powerful machine, and if left unchecked, it will always default to analysis, judgment, and self-protection.

To break free from this mental dominance, we have to implement daily, tactical habits that draw our energy down from our heads and into our bodies. Here is the operational blueprint for living and leading with an open heart.

1. Set the Morning Intention to Open Your Heart

High-performing women excel at morning routines. We track our habits, review our calendars, and set our daily professional targets. To open your heart, you must apply that same intentionality to your emotional state before you ever open your laptop.

Every morning, set a conscious intention to move through your day with an open heart. When you make this shift, your perception of the world changes. Your primary goal is no longer just executing a checklist; it is spreading love and light.

  • Keep your head up: Physically change your posture. Lift your gaze when walking through public spaces.
  • Smile more: Offer genuine, warm eye contact to the people you pass.
  • Talk to strangers: Engage in brief, kind interactions with the barista, the flight attendant, or the person next to you in line.

Be fully present and actively listen during your conversations. Practice doing less and feeling more. Throughout your day, ruthlessly protect moments of stillness and silence, allowing your nervous system to settle so your heart has the space to be felt.

2. Identify and Dismantle Your Heart Blocks

Living with an open heart requires a willingness to do the hard internal work of identifying what is blocking your emotional flow. Because so many of us spent decades operating from pure drive, we have become profoundly disconnected from our heart’s deepest desires.

Dismantling these blocks often requires external support, whether that means hiring a dedicated coach or committing to deep somatic reflection. We have to look closely at the specific pains, past betrayals, or lingering fears that caused us to close our hearts in the first place.

The mind's primary directive is safety. To keep you safe from the pain of rejection or the discomfort of not being seen, your mind will construct elaborate stories. It will convince you to choose emotionally unavailable people, stay behind a professional mask, or remain detached, ensuring you can never be hurt.

True growth begins when you commit to pushing past this mental armor. Allow your internal discomfort to be your compass. When you feel the urge to close up, protect yourself, or withdraw, let that friction be the exact signal that it is time to soften, lean in, and open your heart wider.

3. Practice Gentleness and Schedule Love

For the highly driven woman, expressing soft, warm emotions may not always feel natural or spontaneous, especially when exhausted by the demands of leadership. If open-heartedness doesn't flow effortlessly yet, treat it with the same respect you treat any other vital business system: build a habit out of it.

Practice radical gentleness with the people closest to you. Show your partner, your children, and your closest friends intentional acts of love and appreciation. If you find your days swallowing these intentions whole, physically add them to your calendar. Block out time dedicated solely to connection, free from the pressure of an agenda.

Habits are formed through consistent repetition. By regularly practicing gentleness, you retrain your brain to realize that expressing love is a safe, rewarding baseline behavior.

4. Spend More Time Out of Your Head

The mind is an incredible tool for strategy, but it is an absolute trap for emotion. You cannot feel with your intellect. If you try to analyze open-heartedness, your mind will instantly take over the process, overthinking every interaction and generating endless stories about how you might get hurt, rejected, or taken advantage of. You must give the machine a break.

Find activities that force your brain to go quiet and allow your body to take over. This could look like a daily meditation practice, immersive breathwork, or engaging in intense, adventurous activities where you literally do not have the luxury or the time to think. Whether you are hiking a steep trail, skiing down a mountain, or sitting in deep silence, getting out of your head creates an immediate clearing for the heart to breathe.

5. Shift from Reciprocity to Pure Outpouring

One of the greatest traps of an open heart is the expectation of immediate reciprocity. The analytical mind loves to measure balances: it tracks who texts back first, who gives more support, and whether our vulnerability is being matched dollar-for-dollar by the other person. When we measure connection this way, we almost always end up disappointed. Connection isn't about convenience, though.

True open-heartedness is an act of pure outpouring, not a commercial transaction. It is about pouring out love, joy, and encouragement to the world simply because your reservoir is full, knowing and accepting that the recipient may never give you anything in return.

You must trust that God and the universe or whatever you believe in manage the ultimate ledger. The love you pour out into the world never vanishes; it circulates. When you release the need to control exactly how and from whom love returns to you, you open the floodgates for abundance to flow back into your life from unexpected sources.

Boundaries Without Anger: The Open-Hearted Leader

A common misconception is that keeping an open heart means becoming a doormat, allowing anyone and everyone access to your energy. This could not be further from the truth.

Leading with an open heart actually requires stronger, cleaner boundaries. You can, and absolutely should, maintain fierce boundaries to keep toxic individuals, opportunists, and chronic energy suckers at a distance. The difference lies in the emotional energy you carry behind those boundaries.

An open-hearted leader enforces a boundary without carrying an ounce of anger, resentment, or bitterness toward the person she is shutting out. She recognizes that their behavior is a reflection of their own deep heart blocks, wishes them well from afar, and closes the door firmly. Your boundary keeps your space clean, but your open heart ensures your internal soul stays pure.

When we choose to lead our lives, our families, and our businesses with an open heart, we create entirely new paradigms of possibility. We break the cycle of isolation that plagues modern leadership. By showing up with warmth, lifting our heads, and refusing to conceal our kind feelings, we don't just change our own internal experience of joy, we deepen connections with every person we meet, creating a ripple effect that implicitly gives them permission to open their hearts, too.
